Podcast: The Darkness We Need — A Conversation on Light Pollution
In this special podcast episode, Save Darkness founder Harsha Joshi sits down for an in-depth conversation about the organization's mission, the science behind light pollution, and why darkness is not something to fear but something to protect.
Episode Highlights
The Personal Journey
Harsha shares the story of how a routine trip during the G20 events in 2019 turned into a life-changing revelation. "I was standing outside late at night, and I noticed something that should have been obvious but never registered before — the sheer amount of light being thrown into the sky, onto empty roads, into forests. And I started thinking: what is this doing to the birds? The insects? The animals that need darkness to survive?"
The Science
The conversation dives deep into the science of light pollution — from the mechanics of how blue-rich LED light scatters in the atmosphere to create skyglow, to the biological mechanisms through which artificial light suppresses melatonin and disrupts circadian rhythms. "When people learn that the World Health Organization considers night shift work a probable carcinogen because of circadian disruption, they start paying attention. This is not just about seeing stars — it is about public health."
The Wildlife Crisis
Harsha describes the team's experiences at Rushikulya, watching Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings crawl toward road lights instead of the ocean. "There is nothing more heartbreaking than watching a tiny hatchling, barely the size of your palm, crawling with every ounce of energy toward a parking lot light. It does not know that it is heading toward death instead of the ocean. That image stays with you. It fuels the work."
The Solutions
The discussion covers practical solutions at every level — from individual households to national policy. "The beautiful thing about light pollution is that it is instantly reversible. The moment you turn off an unnecessary light, shield a fixture, or switch to a warm-spectrum bulb, the improvement is immediate. You do not have to wait decades for results like with carbon emissions or plastic pollution."
The Vision
Harsha outlines Save Darkness's vision for the future: India's first Dark Sky Reserves, a nationwide network of Dark Sky Ambassadors in schools, and the integration of responsible lighting standards into municipal planning across the country. "We want to reach a point where no new street light is installed in India without considering its impact on the night sky, on wildlife, and on human health."
