Save Darkness

Our Mission

Protecting darkness. Preserving life.

"We believe that darkness is not the absence of light it is the presence of nature, the guardian of wildlife, and the keeper of human health."

Protect Wildlife

Over 60% of the world's species are nocturnal. Light pollution disrupts their feeding, mating, and migration patterns, pushing many towards extinction.

Safeguard Human Health

Artificial light at night suppresses melatonin production, disrupts circadian rhythms, and has been linked to increased risks of cancer, obesity, and depression.

Conserve Energy

An estimated 35% of outdoor lighting is wasted, costing billions of dollars annually and contributing significantly to carbon emissions and climate change.

Our Mission

Save Darkness is on a mission to combat light pollution and restore the natural night sky for the benefit of all life on Earth.

We envision a world where artificial lighting is used responsibly — providing safety and functionality without destroying the darkness that ecosystems, wildlife, and humans need to thrive. Our mission is built on four pillars:

1. Protect Wildlife

Billions of animals are harmed by artificial light every year. Sea turtle hatchlings are lured away from the ocean. Migratory birds are disoriented and collide with illuminated structures. Insects — the foundation of food chains — are decimated by light traps. We work to implement wildlife-friendly lighting practices in critical habitats across India.

2. Safeguard Human Health

Exposure to artificial light at night disrupts our circadian rhythms, suppresses melatonin production, and is linked to increased rates of cancer, obesity, depression, and sleep disorders. We advocate for healthier lighting in homes, workplaces, and public spaces.

3. Conserve Energy & Climate

An estimated 30% of outdoor lighting energy is wasted — light that shines upward or sideways serves no purpose. By promoting efficient, properly directed lighting, we can reduce carbon emissions and save billions of rupees in energy costs nationwide.

4. Preserve the Night Sky

The Milky Way is invisible to more than one-third of humanity. We believe every person deserves the opportunity to look up and see the stars. Through Dark Sky Reserve designations and community lighting reforms, we are working to preserve the few remaining pristine night skies in India.

"We do not inherit the night sky from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children."
