Community Lighting Audit Walk
Become a citizen scientist! Join Save Darkness for a hands-on community lighting audit walk through the streets of Thane. Armed with light meters, smartphones, and observation checklists, we will systematically assess the outdoor lighting in a selected neighborhood — identifying waste, glare, light trespass, and opportunities for improvement.
What You Will Learn
- How to identify different types of light pollution: skyglow, glare, light trespass, and clutter
- How to use a lux meter and sky quality meter to measure light levels
- What makes a light fixture "dark sky friendly" vs. wasteful
- How to document and report lighting issues to local authorities
- Practical recommendations for improving outdoor lighting in residential areas
Outcomes
The data collected during this walk will be compiled into a formal lighting audit report and presented to the Thane Municipal Corporation with specific recommendations for improvement. Past audit walks have led to tangible lighting improvements in multiple communities.
Limited to 30 participants. Registration required. All equipment will be provided.
