Save Darkness Foundation Receives 80G & 12A Approval

A major milestone for Save Darkness — our foundation has received approval under Section 80G and 12A of the Income Tax Act, enabling tax-deductible donations and strengthening our mission to fight light pollution across India.

Save Darkness Foundation Receives 80G & 12A Approval

We are thrilled to announce that Save Darkness Foundation has officially received approval under Section 80G and Section 12A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This is a significant milestone in our journey to combat light pollution and preserve the natural night sky across India.

What This Means

For Donors: All donations to Save Darkness are now eligible for tax deduction under Section 80G. This means Indian taxpayers can claim a deduction of 50% of their donated amount from their taxable income when filing returns. Every donation you make now goes further — you support a cause you care about while receiving a tax benefit.

For the Organization: Section 12A registration means that Save Darkness Foundation's income from donations and grants is exempt from income tax, allowing us to direct 100% of our funds toward our mission. This also opens doors to receiving CSR funding from corporations, government grants, and international funding — significantly expanding our capacity to fight light pollution.

Our Journey to This Point

Since our founding in 2020, Save Darkness has operated with limited resources but unlimited passion. We bootstrapped our early campaigns, relying on volunteer effort and small personal contributions. The 80G and 12A approval validates our work and governance standards, signaling to donors and partners that we are a credible, well-managed organization worthy of their support.

What We Have Achieved So Far

  • Reached over 10,000 students through the Dark Sky School Program across 100+ schools in Maharashtra
  • Launched the Turtle-Safe Coast initiative at Rushikulya, Odisha, protecting thousands of Olive Ridley hatchlings
  • Engaged with 50+ communities through awareness campaigns and star walk events
  • Built a network of 1,200+ active volunteers across India
  • Conducted lighting audits for multiple housing societies and municipal areas

What Comes Next

With this approval, we are scaling up our operations across three flagship campaigns:

  1. Turtle-Safe Coasts: Expanding our coastal lighting reform to additional nesting sites in Odisha and Maharashtra
  2. Dark Sky School Program: Doubling our school outreach to 200+ schools in the coming year
  3. Community Lighting Reform: Launching an ambitious program to retrofit 500+ light fixtures across 10 communities
